Crystal Dynamics has taken to Reddit to condemn harassment and abuse directed towards Marvel’s Avengers developers as both the development studio and publisher Square Enix continue to face backlash over recent microtransactions.
As we reported yesterday, Marvel’s Avengers has introduced paid XP boosts after players were promised cosmetic-only microtransactions prior to the game’s release. Neither company has addressed the backlash yet, but Crystal Dynamics reminded players that decisions aren’t made by one person, and are often above developers’ paygrades. In other words, the development team isn’t responsible for Square Enix’s decisions.
A statement from Crystal Dynamics reads:
We appreciate the Marvel’s Avengers community and want to foster an open and healthy dialogue with you (for both criticism and praise). However, harassment is not tolerated.
Decisions at the studio are not made by one person, they’re made by a group of studio leaders. We welcome feedback, but it’s not appropriate to target, threaten, or personally attack our community team. They are here to champion your concerns and give voice to them.
Help us keep conversations civil and productive while we continue to work toward making Marvel’s Avengers an entertaining and fun experience for you.
Broken promises aside, Marvel’s Avengers XP gains were slowed down as Crystal Dynamics claimed that players were leveling up too fast and becoming “overwhelmed.” That it ended up adding paid XP boosts allowing players to do exactly what it didn’t want them to do beggars belief. Nevertheless, this decision most likely came from the publisher, and harassment and abuse is uncalled for. Voting with your wallet remains the best course of action.
